Most women would just as soon leave home without makeup as they would walk out the door without wearing pants. Makeup is an essential, which is why one of a woman's most important accessories is her cosmetics bag the little pouch that holds every tool she needs to look fresh–faced throughout the day and night. For some women, that little pouch isn't so little anymore. When you have to buy a bigger purse just to accommodate your makeup bag, you're carrying around way too much stuff.
So here in all its (probably underwhelming) glory is my daily makeup bag at the moment. I keep everything in a small bag, otherwise I'd add and add products until the bag grew into some manner of cosmetic mutant that demanded its own bedroom.
Aveeno Baby Eczema Therapy Moisturizing Cream:
I may have a bit of a moisturizer problem. No, not may. I have a full-fledged moisturizer problem. My hands, my face, my arms and legs—all have to be well hydrated in the morning or my whole day will be ruined. This body cream may be meant for babies with eczema, but its unscented, gentle, incredibly rich formula is just as effective at keeping my obsession in check. It's so rich, in fact, that it will soothe even the roughest elbows or post-shaving flakiness.
Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Cream Eye Shadow in Shore:
This cream shadow is like foundation for your lids, and without fail I apply it every morning. It's long-wearing, so it makes a great base for eyeliner, while the deep-beige color actually brightens up and evens out the tone of my lids, making my eyes appear bigger, rounder, and more awake-looking.
mascara of choice at the moment is the beyond excellent Miss Manga by L'Oréal – one coat of that and my eyes are done!
Lancôme Baume in Love in Urban Ballet:
Sure, this lipstick looks highlighter pink in the tube, but swipe it on your lips and you're left with the sheerest tint of color. It gives that effect of just sucking on a lollipop or eating a red or pink popsicle, but without the mess. In fact, it's not as slippery as most tinted lip balms, so I find it's easier to apply (it doesn't get all over the skin around your lips), and the color stays longer, too.
Tom Ford Shade & Illuminate Palette:
When every professional makeup artist is obsessed with a product, you know it has to be good. This is the MVP (most valuable product) for the red carpet, backstage at fashion shows, and my own personal makeup bag. The highlighting cream has just enough shimmer to reflect light off the cheekbones and the Cupid's bow without looking like you showered in glitter. And the bronze-colored contouring cream is sheer and buildable, so the effect is subtle rather than stripy.
There are thousands of cosmetics companies in world and hundreds of categories of products, so it’s natural to become a little overwhelmed. Finding the mascara that’s perfect for your lashes can become a side job, while perfecting your red lipstick application can turn into a never-ending project. With the daunting amount of options out there, sometimes it’s best to think about getting back to the basics – a simpler time when your bathroom cabinet wasn’t so stuffed that it caused an avalanche every time you reached for the toothpaste.
